Opting for Stem mastering for your project offers increased efficiency during both the mixing and mastering stages. It allows for easier balancing of the project compared to traditional mastering methods.

  • Prepare Your Mix: Before bouncing down your project, make sure that your mix is well-balanced and all the individual tracks are EQ’d, compressed, and processed appropriately. It’s crucial to have a solid mix before moving on to the mastering stage.

  • Choose the Right Format: Decide on the format you want to bounce down your project in. Common formats include WAV, AIFF, set sample rates of 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. at 24bit.

  • Set Proper Levels: Ensure that your levels are not clipping and that there is enough headroom for the mastering engineer to work with. Aim for a peak level of around -6 dB to -3 dB to leave room for processing during mastering.

  • Organize Your Stems: Carefully organize your stems based on different components such as vocals, drums, bass, etc. Each stem should contain related elements to allow for targeted processing during mastering.

  • Choose the Right Number of Stems: Decide on the appropriate number of stems based on the complexity of your project, Ensure each stem serves a distinct purpose. Up to 6 stereo stems max.

  • Export Stems: In your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), select the tracks you want to stem down. Export each group of tracks as stems by soloing the desired tracks and bouncing them down together.

  • Label and Save Stems: After exporting the stems, label each file clearly to indicate its contents (e.g., drum stem, vocal stem). Save these stems in a separate folder dedicated to the stemmed-down version of your project .

  • Check Stems for Accuracy: Listen to each stem to ensure they sound as intended and that no elements are missing or incorrectly exported.

  • Share Stems: Once you have verified the accuracy of your stems, share them with us for further processing or mixing.
